Pierluigi Tolaini dopo un percorso costruito in Canada come imprenditore, torna nel 1998 in Italia, per acquistare terreni adatti alla grande viticultura. Sceglie le proprietà di Montebello e San Giovanni vicino Castelnuovo Berardenga, per una estensione di 108Ha di terreno tra vigneto, oliveto e bosco. L’intenzione è quella di riorganizzare completamente lo stato delle vigne esistenti, i sistemi di allevamento e le strutture collegate. Nel 1999 iniziano i lavori di ristrutturazione dei poderi di Montebello e San Giovanni realizzando anche uffici, cantina ed allogi per gli operai. Nel 2000 parte l’opera più importante di questo progetto: la costruzione ex-novo della barriccaia.
